Exploring Essential Peritoneal Dialysis Terminology: An Overview

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is performed by infusion of dialysate into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneum (the membrane covering the abdominal cavity) acts as a semipermeable membrane from which waste products are allowed to be transported to the dialysate which is then removed. This infographic provides an overview of the two principle types of PD, continuous ambulatory and automated PD. Continuous cyclic PD and Tidal PD are forms of automated PD. Assisted, incremental and intermittent PD are terms that encompass different approaches to PD that involve varying levels of patient involvement, frequency and assistance.
